The SD community isn't liking this deal right now. What are the better alternatives in this price range for an unlocked phone? I am shopping for an elderly family member.

Horrible deal. This was like $60 from ST not long ago and unlocked after 60 days.

The camera on this isn't great but it would suit the needs of an elderly person.

My 22 model performed very well except for the camera, so I upvoted this. But maybe I shouldn't since I only paid like $180 about 18 months ago.

I have the 2024 Edge and Gcam app (from XDA) makes the cam MUCH better.

This phone isn't very good. I have one, 75 from metro last year. Still not on Android 15! At this price makes more sense to buy an older flagship. Battery life is noticeably worse than my S23 ultra, despite same battery size.

But seniors need iphones, Android is usually too complex for them.

Good review thanks. Yay, 23U team!

I'll counter with seniors usually need what they are familiar with or what their tech go-to has nearby. I've found it very helpful to add a basic launcher to Android and use it's customizations to really simplify a phone for my MiL, but maybe that's more work than some folks want to commit to. I have an older backup iPhone to help my father (who has an iPhone with work and then often runs into issues with it). Also, often apple users want to share something and are totally unaware of the walled garden they are in and it becomes frustrating for both sides. (I don't mean to make this an OS debate).

I disagree with the assumption that seniors need iPhones. Seniors in other countries where iPhones are prohibitively expensive use Android just fine. I have family in their 80s-90s in Asia using $30 Android Go phones that are honestly painful for me to use but they seem to have no problem opening Line and Facebook Messenger to make calls.

If anything, Apple has a lot of nags like automatic iCloud backups that end up taking up all your "free" 5GB iCloud storage that only exists to give you a full storage warning. My mom is only in her 50s and still signs up for iCloud every couple months because she gets warnings about full iCloud storage on her iPhone even though we tell her to just turn off iCloud (she only has a single Apple device which is her phone).

A lot of the way Apple designs things only work the Apple way also with no workarounds. It can actually make iOS kind of complicated and frustrating for seniors because sometimes you really want to set something one way to make it easy, but the option to customize isn't even there.

I have a Motorola One 5G Ace and the Android on it is VERY simple. "Dumbed down" Android, for better or worse. I have an S23U which is pretty easy to use. I have a 13 Pro Max that I don't find easier, but more convoluted at times than Samsung One UI. A lot of those "Seniors" have been using computers to way, way, way back when. Many were responsible for the computer revolution. Live is far more complex.

Yes, and as I commented, "Android" has many flavors, some super simple, some more complex.

What's an elderly person? Old and feeble and afraid of computers many of them have used for 35-50 years?

Somebody with low expectations for their devices. People who appreciate the massive amount of technological progress that has been made in communications devices and don't expect to be on the bleeding edge.
