After I ended up with a dongle that would no longer pair, I did some searching and found folks who were cautioning about having the dongle plugged in at all when doing the controller update(which is done wired).
It seems like the controller updater can decide to push the controller firmware into the dongle if it's attached, which bricks it.
So now I have a controller that is updated and works fine via Bluetooth or wired, and is willing to pair to a non-updated dongle, but absolutely won't pair to the "updated" dongle which is stuck in a fast-blink, in theory ready to pair state.
