It's a CPU so it's for things that take a lot of processing. Like rendering video, editing, virtual machines, etc. Though you could still game with it. For gaming you'd look for a good GPU.

Overkill for gaming specifically...If u have other CPU intensive uses like running parallel hypervisors, generating complex build systems and simulations it will outshine other mainstream cpus.

Few games are well multithreaded, mainly because things are changing so much that maintaining state between each process becomes too much of an overhead. This is particularly true of FPS games.
Big numbers of cores are great for running lots of different things at once, or taking a big, predictable task (e.g VFX) and breaking it into lots of smaller, predictable tasks.

Most people don't need a threadripper, but the people that do take advantage of more than just threads such as ram and more pcie lanes.
