$80 new is a stretch. They were $40 at Walmart for a while over 2 years ago. $20 is a good price if you plan to OpenWRT: https://github.com/dangowrt/owrt-ubi-installer
I have 4 of them running around my house as a wired mesh on openwrt.

Been solid as my main router on OpenWRT for many years now. Everything is e-waste to you if you're chasing specs that end up being meaningless to you. I will say that you can just about cover 1400 sqft of you place it in the center of your residence, but not much more.

The $40 MR5500 on sale at w00t might be a better buy, even if it's Qualcomm based (the E8450 is Mediatek).

I posted this because it's a very cheap, fast upgrade option for anyone who needs a basic router with ethernet and a decent coverage area. The mesh options etc. are great, but as a standalone it's the perfect low dollar solution for the average home user and will outperform many ISP speeds. Basic setup is likely very simple for the non-tech-savvy user, as most Linksys products are.

What openwrt firmware are using?
Also, was the mesh setup easy to setup? Did you happen to use any online guides or tutorials to setup the mesh?

Advice is most appreciated ☺️

the latest openwrt fixed the OKOD - OpenWrt Kiss of Death. Just follow the "Upgrading an UBI installation to new releases after 2024-02 (Includes ALL SNAPSHOTS, 24.10-SNAPSHOTs, 24.10.0-rcX releases and all releases in the foreseeable future)" you should be fine.

I use ethernet backhaul for the wifi meshing... where I just setup the wifi with same ID and same password.

It's somewhat intimidating the first time not gonna lie. Here are my notes, please paste it into ChatGPT and ask it to format it for you, Slickdeals messed up my formatting

OpenWRT WDS

WDS Configuration Steps
On Your Main Router:

Set the wireless mode to Access Point (WDS).

Ensure WDS is enabled.

On Your OpenWrt Repeater / WDS Device:

Go to Network > Wireless.

Click Scan on the desired radio, join your main network.

Set the mode to Client (WDS).

Assign the wireless interface to the lan network.

Change the LAN IP address of OpenWrt to a unique IP in the same subnet as the main router.

Disable DHCP on the OpenWrt device (your main router will provide DHCP).

(Optional) Add a new Wi-Fi network in Access Point mode (on the same or another radio):

Use the same SSID and password as the main router for seamless roaming.

wds- On your main router, set the wireless mode to "Access Point (WDS)" and ensure it's enabled.- On your OpenWrt repeater/WDS device: - Go to **Network > Wireless**. - Click **Scan** on the desired radio, join your main network, and select **Client (WDS)** for mode. - Assign the wireless interface to the **lan** network. - Change your OpenWrt LAN IP to a unique address in the same subnet as your main router. - Disable the DHCP server on OpenWrt (since your main router will handle DHCP). - Optionally, add a new Wi-Fi network in **Access Point** mode (on the same or another radio) for local clients, using the same SSID/password for seamless roaming.
Many many thanks for your replies! woot

As other users mentioned, these are great OpenWRT boxes. I bought these back when they were $99 and they've been reliable and have served me for years.

There isn't much right now that is super attractive yet in OpenWRT for wifi6E or wifi7.

What is the expected throughput of using the wifi as the connection between 2 of these? How would using one as an access point and one as a router compare to using 2 in a wireless mesh using wifi as the back haul? Which would provide higher speeds for the ethernet ports on the second router?

This is for sure better than the Atlas devices for OpenWrt. If I didn't already have those Linksys LN1301's from Woot last fall, I'd buy these for sure. Generally speaking, Mediatek based devices (which this is) are better for OpenWrt than Qualcomm based devices. Note that the 2.4 GHz hardware doesn't support AX (only on 5 GHz).

Question! I have 2 Linksys Velop AX4200 on openwrt with wifi roaming, can I use this to add to that same wifi roaming? I'll probably wait till I get another tri-band but just wondering if I can add any openwrt able routers to add to wifi roaming.
