These things are heavy duty AF.

I've overloaded these and they've held up great.

Usually true, but if it's a choice of putting limited time into building ship storage or progressing a build then it's a good use case. They're also less bulky than wooden solutions.

I use one of these and am a woodworker and no you can not.

Wood is not strong enough to build a rack of this design. To make a true T shelf like this you have to scale up the wood to 4X4 at minimum with a 3"X3" heavy mortise and tenons and that would still likely be weaker than this. Your five jut outs eat up about 16" of wall space versus the 5" these take. You could use or make some kind of braced rack but they also take space and you lose all clear and readily available storage that fits in a very small area you get with these.

What you can do easily is mount these to the wall with some screws and be done. Then i can get to woodworking. Your way is money loser for wood and money loser again with shop time and you end up with an inferior product. Do notice that warehouses do not use wood as it is weaker than steel and it can also be a safety issue.

For anybody reading this and considering I had my doubts before purchase but these give you a great amount of storage compacity in a very small area that you will get with nothing else. I have built and tried various wood racks over many years and they all paled in comparison.

Thanks for that i had no idea that knockoffs were in the market. I'd be interested in seeing a side by side comparison. I do not think you would want soft and cheesy steel on the design but in today's world I sometimes find knockoff better than the originals.

Meh, unless you get a great deal on the hardware its going to cost nearly just as much. Will surely cost more if you factor in your labor.

Well not sure what you loaded it with.

I've put the equivalent of five 4x4x16' on 1 set of rungs.

Granted, that's spaced across 6 sets of rungs.
And using tapcons instead of the included screws/anchor.

I have mine ridiculously overloaded as well and have been impressed. Like you I used building quality heavy fasteners designed for vertical loads.

I went from a two car garage to a small one and they were a lifesaver that let still keep needed lumber in the much smaller space. They have been fully loaded and overloaded for five years now without any problems. They can definitely be used for other stuff like surfboards and ladders

I really would like set on the side of my shed to store ladders, scaffold lumber, rebar and any miscellaneous lengths of stuff up and out of the way but wonder if rust would eat them up. Ideally a little roof on it but I do have stuff that I do not worry about the weather to store but woory about the weather on the rack

I got the impression this could happen when I got mine. Strong enough but not overbuilt, would be happier to see them the next gauge thicker.

If this is the same one I got from Lowe's several years ago it's quite strong. I store a lot of thick 12' boards and have never had an issue, also it's in a damn shed and no rust.

That exactly mirrors my initial impression as well but the gauge does the trick even overloaded I am am good five years in.

There is also something to be said for design that exactly meets the needs of what it has to do with minimal cost and materiel. That heavier gauge may cost a us another $15 to $30 and I probably would not have one.
