For those concerned about the heat issue (described more in detail here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/...esign_mod/), there are ways to 3D print a stand to include a fan. For example: https://www.printables.com/model/...-g9-cooler

Or this one: https://www.printables.com/model/...-g9-modkit

That's one of the benefits of this little machine. With that adapter, there are still slots for a few NVMe drives. I'm looking at doing just what you described to use this as a second unRAID machine for backups.

I was wondering if you mind sharing the link to the n.2 to SATA adapter you are using. And which M.2 slot did you put use it on? I am not sure if it matters or not. And if you don't mind me asking, are you running Truenas? Or other OS? Thanks.

I bought some cheap adapters from AliExpress but I've seen this one recommended on YT https://a.co/d/7mdVF9U
Currently I have 2 adapters (slot 3 & 4) with 12 HDDs and a 128gb nvme (slot 1) for proxmox, ARRs and a DSM VM for NAS. I have everything in an old ATX PC case with a PSU to power the fans and HDDs. The restrictions are that there's only 2 pcie lanes for the 4 m.2 slots and I think those are also tied to the ethernet ports. Also cannot upgrade the ram but I have a couple other NUCs for other services.

Thanks for the info! I am glad the 12gb ram is able to handle that. I hope you don't mind me asking. How do you connect the psu to the drives since the psu is not connected to the G9? How do you keep the power supply on? Is there a youtube or link you can share? I have been trying and cannot find it. How big is your PSU for 12 drives? 300W? 500W? I have an old 650W from way back in the day I hope to be able to use but I just don't know how to keep it powered on. Thanks for any help you can provide. I appreciate your time.

I don't mind sharing as long as others don't mind. Any PSU would work with a jumper, they're cheap or you can diy, my PSU is just a spare 500w I had lying around. I just figured things out as I went along so I'm not expert. Honestly now I would probably get a Beelink ME mini for $209 from their site since it has better cooling and 6 nvme slots.

Thanks! I did see someone (Raid Owl) on Youtube that he added SATA to 1 of the NVME slots but he mentioned only certain ones worked. And since the intent of the layout is to use the center as a cooler, that means the SATA ports won't fit because it is facing in. So, he had to get another ribbon cable to connect from the NVME slot then to the 6 port SATA adapter. It was fun to watch. Thank you again for your info.

Thanks for bringing up that Beelink ME Mini. That looks like it could be a great option. I might wait for that now instead of getting this.

Hey guys I'm trying to get a little PC to hook up to my TV in the living room so I can watch media like youtube without the ads. But I don't want to spend much. Currently I'm using a 4k google TV dongle. I figured I could get a really cheap mini PC and hook that up to it. Anyone got any recommendations?

Any N97/N100/N150 mini pc would do that just fine. This one I posted isn't the best for that option. The Beelink Mini S12 Pro is generally well regarded. GMKtec has a couple options in the $130 range. Using a Mini PC for that isn't nearly as easy as using a dedicated device, but it's possible.

You could instead do this option: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetw...are_button
"Use tailscale to set a computer as an exit node, have a vpn running on that computer that's connected to Albania. Done, Albania doesn't allow YouTube ads."

You could use your dongle, install Tailscale, have Tailscale running on another computer wtih a VPN set to Albania. That's maybe more complicated, but could possibly be done with your current hardware. It would, however, require a VPN with an Albanian server.
I do something like this with an Apple TV but I connect it directly to an Albanian VPN server instead of Tailscale to exit node.

I wouldn't suggest a Windows PC for a Media Center. The 4k Google TV Dongle would be worlds better. Windows HDR is just hot garbage. You should probably give this a try https://smarttubeapp.github.io/ instead.

Great idea! I'd love to build a NAS using this platform. Since you have one of these things, can you tell me if it supports in-band ECC? Some N100 devices could sacrifice some memory capacity & performance for IBECC, and it would be configured in the firmware/BIOS.

You can 3d print a better cooling solution, search for gmktec g9 modkit
It does get better thermals unmodified by standing vertically.

I'm deploying proxmox but found it was better to use Pi devices to Bare Metal each then to virtualize NAS/Firewall/DNS/Security into a N100 like I had originally tried.
Looking at faster chips I was waiting on a N200 or something before trying to rebuild my homelab into a proxmox again. I have a big boy ZFS nas with ECC. But some clients would be interested in a cheap fast (fake SAN) NAS like this. Especially as a low cost office node.
