it's an ok deal if you just need it for wifi use. this phone is carrier locked to att unless you pay for 6 months of service. there are other carriers with less months, like verizon is 60 days of service, if you want to unlock and use elsewhere.BTW, I have the a15 and use it just as wifi home device. after turning off/uninstall bloat apps, pretty good for browsing, email, reading, slickdeals app, and other simple apps.

IMHO this is the best wifi device on the market for children. The samsung kids Suite is built in and actually quite good. Add in the recent A series upgrade to charging speed and screen and its way better than it should be even for larger humans. There's a reason why this is samsungs best selling phone.

AT&T also doesn't push Android updates to phones that don't get activated on their network. I have been burned by this in the past.

you mean you can't even upgrade the phone OS?
I wonder if it is OEM locked and you can just put something lighter and bloat-free from XDA.

The last phone I had with them you click on "AT&T software updates" in settings and their server checks to see if you should be getting updates. It's their way to force you to signup for prepaid service. Hopefully that's changed but knowing them I doubt it. I'd be happy to hear otherwise.

If I already have a AT&T postpaid line, use that to activate this phone, keep it in the drawer for 6 monhts, will I be able to unlock it then?

If you have an ATT plan already, is there any catch or are you able to just buy this phone since you just need a new phone but want to continue on your current plan/billing?

Yep, still does on my s24U. The Samsung Server allow you to download update but once it complete the download, the client AT&T software check with AT&T server and tell you it failed. LoLz... You must find the unlocked version firmware and re-flash it.

Samsung doesn't require OEM unlock to flash an official firmware. In addition, luckily, Samsung allows freely flash any carrier's firmware as we wish, and will still receive proper OTA updates. I flashed an unlocked firmware to Metro phone.
Slightly advanced since wrong operation may lead to a (very likely fixable) brick. Worst case scenario it's $50 loss.

Easiest tempoary solution: borrow a friend's AT&T sim card.

yeah this would be worth doing that, give it to a nephew to feed their phone addiction -- I mean use it for education

Yes, as long as you download the audio to the phone or use Wi-Fi to stream. I have this phone without cell service and use it with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth earbuds when I mow the lawn and also with Chromecast audio connected to the stereo in our garage.
