What is the link between rooftop solar and insurance? Closing on a house and exploring solar options. I am not aware of this insurance angle
Answering the above questions:
Solar Panels: Unless you find a local dealer, there is a .20 - .30 cents per watt to go by, so you can figure ($1,968-$2952)
A 10kW off grid inverter typically goes anywhere from $1500-3000
So even if you could get everything on a deal separately you'd still be looking at upwards of $12-14k give or take not including shipping fees for pallets of solar.
You'll still need to factor in the amount of wire to buy and the time/research to get up to speed with wiring all this to the side of your house or in a shed somewhere.
They wouldn't cover it anyway. The solar companies give warranties for set times, but insurance doesn't cover water leaks over time like that, they only cover if there is some major failure all at once. If its a leak that goes on for years or decades and rots the wood they all have clauses that say you should have known/noticed in standard inspections or maintenance and that the issue is due to your neglect and thus not covered.
I believe the issue would be more if it caused a fire, since they would normally cover that, but if you did it yourself they may not, and would definitely not if you violated even a single code (they would dig and find SOMETHING no matter how obscure), and they probably wouldn't if they aren't UL listed, as thats in almost all insurance contracts. I'm pretty sure these aren't UL listed.
The guy in the comments that is building a solar gazebo away from his home and powering stuff in a shed or disconnected from his home has the right idea, unless you're an electrician and own the house outright and don't have insurance.
