Best under $500 is one of the Gretsch Electromatic Center Block Jr guitars that Adorama has had on sale several times this year. The quilted maple ones got as low as $449 and the solid color ones got as low as $399. I don't think I've ever seen a guitar this nice for under $500.
Assuming they come back at that price again, those are the steals of the year.
The other Gretsch guitars you find here for under $400 and sometimes under $300 are also pretty awesome value plays. There's not a single one I wouldn't recommend.
You might think a Gretsch is too country for you, but I promise you, they're not. Check out some review videos. They're fitted with unique pickups that sound great playing any type of music you care to play, yet still maintain their own brand signature.
