But a Microsoft Xbox Live account is free, right? It's good to know the requirement is there, but many developers and publishers do this already.

Not a dealbreaker for me, but might be if you're intending to play on a Steamdeck while traveling or otherwise offline.

How does cross play work here? Steam users w/xbl accounts play with Xbox players?

In multiplayer, pvp, everything is crossplay. In coop mode, only reach and halo 4 are able to play coop using crossplay

I have this on Xbox, but I'm tempted to get the PC version so I can play the online for free. It's one of the few non-F2P Xbox games I'm interested in playing online (you don't need GamePass for free-to-play games).

That as well as having access to a bunch on mods on the Steam Workshop. New Campaigns, weapons, vehicles and maps.

tbh, I don't think I'm that interested in mods or exotic maps. Really just like doing vanilla matchmaking MP on classic maps. I paid for a month of Gamepass Ultimate this year and really got into Halo: CE multiplayer even though it's got quirky latency issues. The weapons and old-school map design are just so satisfying. It's too bad that MCC doesn't have bots like Infinite, custom CE or Halo 2 matches you could fill at will would be amazing.

I think it technically only requires a Microsoft login, any Microsoft login if you have one, which you can link it to their "Live" service.

For example, my MS gaming stuff is linked to my 20 year old Hotmail account and sometimes I accidently redeem free games on my Outlook account I have never used on a Xbox console of any sort.

Regardless, if you have a Windows PC, you already share everything imaginable with the company, them knowing you also play Halo Reach is probably the least of your concerns

Plays perfectly in 2024+.

In 2022-2023 it was really rough, but they completely redid the game since then. Before there was some kind of internal launcher / install thingy that tried to link all the games together but it was a huge mess, each game had their own control config that would (somehow) still interfere with others, installing / uninstalling different Halo's was a mess, etc. Now they are all linked in one seamless platform.

This is some convoluted and inconsequential, but I am curious: I played through Halo Infinite as my first game on Xbox Series X (after playing the first two levels, prior to the open world, on an Xbox One). I have, from time to time, shifted the game back from an external SSD to the main system storage when their monthly operation revolves around Firefight. I haven't cared about Halo PvP mulitplayer since Halo 3. To my surprise, when I decided to test Firefight out when I purchased my Steam Deck last autumn, ALL achievements were immediately unlocked on Steam once I logged in with my Microsoft Account. The funny part is, the hand out achievements for a version of the campaign that I have not purchased, and have no real reason to.
With the Master Chief Collection, does the same thing happen once you launch the game? What is in the initial ~30GB installation? That's obviously not all the games, that is around 150GB on Xbox. Do all the achievements dating back to 2015 just pop up on Steam? Lastly, because Microsoft saw fit to screw early purchasers, getting EVERY game on Steam costs $5 less than adding Halo Reach and Halo 3 ODST to the Xbox version (seriously, wtf?). At some point, when I decided to replay the campaigns on Heroic for no specific reason, would achievements earned in Halo Reach and Halo 3 ODST on Steam transfer back to the Xbox version? I've seen instances where this does happen (Warframe), and instances where it does not (Splitgate 2).
Lastly, they are obviously allowing you to pick and choose which games get installed based on the initial footprint (I would hope), do they also allow you to NOT install the multiplayer modes? I guess this would only be relevant to Halo Reach, since Halo 3 ODST just recycled Halo 3's multiplayer (for $59.99... what a company). I haven't played Reach in nearly fifteen years because the multiplayer was so bad that I took Amazon's offer of $30 trade in credit not long after launch to get the damn thing away from me. The campaign was one of the best, though. Funny stuff.
