Obviously, different drugs have different lifespans. And some crucial medications should always be fresh for maximum potency, e.g. nitroglycerin for heart disease. Similarly, different nutrients retain different potencies after a supplement's expiration. For example, vitamin C has a relatively short lifespan. But overall, I'm guessing that these multivitamins will still be fine after 5 years. Of note, there is no standard or recommended dose for many micronutrients, e.g. lycopene. That means it's possible that even if some nutrient loses 20% of its potency, it's still more than your body can use. You should, of course, store the bottle in a cool dry place to extend its life.

Despite the evidence, the FDA and other organizations still recommend that you not take expired medications. In fact, even the military tells troops to discard them. In my opinion, they're just being paranoid and overly cautious (and don't care about taxpayers money). The science doesn't lie. Since nutritional supplements are not critical, I have no problems taking some that are 3-5 years past expiration.
