They're just price matching and poaching off of Barnes & Nobles July Criterion sale. Support the last few remaining retailers that actually still sell physical media. Buy from B&N!

The Criterion release blu-ray release has the following:

4K digital restoration of the director's cut, supervised and approved by director Richard Linklater, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
Audio commentary featuring Linklater
Making "Dazed,"a documentary by Kahane Cooperman
Rare on-set interviews and behind-the-scenes footage
Footage from the ten-year-anni versary celebration
Audition footage and deleted scenes
Trailer
PLUS: Essays by critics Kent Jones and Chuck Klosterman

What's insulting is comparing a standard release of a film vs a boutique label release like Criterion is putting out. Is everyone going to want this? Of course not but its pretty simple, if you don't want these extra features don't purchase the release.

Do people really buy Criterion DVDs?I feel like if you get Criterion content, you're an enthusiast that wants the best quality due to the high price.
Enthusiasts will still buy titles that are DVD only and still haven't made their way to Blu-ray or UHD. Of course, those same enthusiasts will likely upgrade if/when those titles get a better release, but it's better to have a DVD copy of a film than no copy at all. And while Criterion keeps past DVD releases in print, I don't think any of their recent additions (in the past couple years) got DVD releases, as they all seem to be Blu-ray and/or UHD only for the reasons you mention.

Libraries still buy DVDs though, as they tend to cater to the widest possible audience, many of which never moved on past DVD players as far as physical media is concerned. I love my 4K movies and it's hard to go back and watch a DVD after being spoiled with the far superior image and sound of BR/UHD.

Ummmm, Amazon is also selling physical media. And unlike B&N, I don't have to drive 40 miles round-trip to get stuff from my porch. I don't have to pay $7 shipping unless I order $50 of stuff which can get hard when they're OOS online or in the stores.

You're missing the point. Amazon is only on sale b/c B&N is. Keep letting Amazon hamstring the other retailers (by supporting their efforts to undercut everyone else b/c they can afford to take the losses longer) and drive them out of the market, and they won't have a need for sales anymore.

So if Amazon is poaching...don't they have to also have and sell the physical medium to price match?
Amazon is price matching. If Barnes and Noble doesn't have this sale, Amazon isn't having this sale. Barnes and Noble goes away and I guarantee a wholesale 50% off of all Criterion releases goes away forever. Buy from Barnes and Noble.

Do you know how much Barnes and Noble overpriced college textbooks for years? Lets not pretend they are some god send. Also, Barnes and Noble would never have this pricing if not for Amazon. I agree it's good to have physical book stores but B&N is far from perfect also. Any company gets too big and almost always they start sucking.

Yeah, so they affected each other. But, as mentioned by others, B&N going away will be the end of getting affordable media.
