I'm seeing so much Lego clearance these days. I would guess the plastic brick market is starting to struggle, but maybe I'm wrong.

The common sets sure, uncommon or retired sets hold and increase value.

There is more competition now. Lumibricks (formerly named 'FunWhole') and Pantasy, among others, are releasing sets that are half Lego's prices but equal or better quality and original designs. Lumibricks, for instance, does all prints and no stickers and includes lighting and still manages to be about half as much.

Lego purists used to look at third parties with disdain, but they have upped their game and shown that Lego doesn't have to charge the outrageous amounts it does for plastic bricks -- they just choose to. It's making Lego look even more overpriced.

I bought clone sets off AliExpress for years and generally found the quality to be 95% that of Lego. The price of course was maybe 20% total price. Anyway that's changed now with the new restrictions It's much more expensive. But I'm certainly in no rush just start spending hundreds of dollars on plastic bricks I've got a huge backlog anyway.

The competition is wonderful. Lego has been very sloppy for years in my opinion. I think it's reached the point now or it's in large part a major bubble especially with all the so-called investors they seem to feel like the older sets can never lose value.

It's easier to produce cheaper sets when you just rip off the IP from other sources and don't pay a licensing fee. There's more that goes into set design than just creating plastic bricks

But I'm also a hypocrite; I've bought sets off AliExpress. Some have been great (Titanic), some have been terrible in quality control (Hogwarts, I probably spent $100 on Bricklink for authentic LEGO replacement parts).

I think LEGO is really focusing too much on the adult market and licensing; these $200 -$300 sets are becoming display sets rather than playsets. Their prices for Star Wars sets is just insane.

Personally, LEGO is becoming stressful rather than fun. The price of the sets makes me want to keep all the pieces together in case I want to sell it and recoup the cost someday, but selling it is always a hassle.
