In my many years… I've found all of these bags eventually leak, they never hold for more than a few months. Maybe some will hold up to a year, so sure these may be great if you're moving, have some temporary reason, or otherwise don't need long term storage. Otherwise, these are just an excuse to not throw away things you should.

Wonder what size would fit the 3D printer filament rolls best?

That pump, though... reminds me of Austin Powers.

None of these types of bags hold vacuum pressure for more than a few months. And quality control is hit or miss. One bag may hold vacuum pressure for a few months, while several bags from the same pack may leak within the same day.

I think once they are vacuumed, you just leave them under heavy boxes of other craps you bought and are not willing to to throw away. Eventually your kids and grand kids will curse you trying to sell your place when you're dead though. But until then it's a good trick to hoard more

I was able to use garbage bags to create vacuum storage bags. Just put your stuff in, and suck out the air in the garbage bags with a vacuum cleaner, and seal the opening with a tie then some tape. Pile your garbage bags on top of each other in a shelving unit, or put them in a sealed box Even if the garbage bag leaks (most of mine didn't), they still remain compressed as long as they're within a confined space. Especially good for storing spare pillows.

Try searching for: "garbage bags" vacuum storage

Do the bags have bad/plastic smell? Wonder if these are good to pack in luggage when traveling?

Yes, that could be true. But they do have a use: for storing winter items in off-season.

I use some to store my down comforter when not in use (its very compressible and works quite well here) that is otherwise gigantic and would take up a ton of closet space.

Compressing blankets and jackets that will then be unpacked during winter months is what these storage bags are great for.

Or, I have also used them for traveling. Since there is a hand pump you can pack your stuff in, compress…then not worry about looking for a vacuum on the return trip.

Not all uses are for long-term storage. Good quality ones are handy tool to have on hand.

I once did this to pack my luggage for vacation. Amazing I brought 2 weeks of clothes in one carryon! Upon return, I couldn't fit my clothes back in. Lesson of the story, bring the pump if you decide to do this.

I'm using this to pack my winter wool blanket. It was still vacuumed sealed when I needed it for the following winter.

These don't have any smells
