I can't get the old prices out of my head. I bought a 4TB 990 Pro from samsung for $199 shipped.

Inflation, tariffs, etc. are just excuses at this point.....

As the boot drive it was rarely running long enough to log in, much less change settings. As far as tech support, My first message to them detailed the tests I had performed as well as details like the drive model and serial number and the receipt for purchase. They sent a canned response asking 13 questions with no troubleshooting suggestions or acknowledgment that I had even sent my original email. Some of the questions were duplicates of each other, which is objectively ridiculous. Every single thing except for my shipping address were things I had included in my original message to them. I'm not sure there was a human involved in the process. So far nothing about this situation makes me want to buy another Samsung drive.

The point is, that price was available multiple times and that's my benchmark. Regardless of where it it came from (Samsung), they were not losing money. I could have purchased another one, but didn't need it at the time and accepted the repercussions.

I understand the current dynamics, but 990s are now yesterday's news, the production costs have more than likely decreased, not risen. For 4 years we lived under the lowest IQ utter idiots that didn't understand basic economics at even an undergrad level (there's proof of this on youtube).

If you want to add a 10% tariff cost that's fine, but IMO a 50% hike is not justified. What we're really seeing is price gouging and profiteering (politely called profit taking). It's an old "memory mfg" deliberate tactic that they trot out to prance around regularly, so, while ugly, it's not new.

Those who can wait, wait. Those who can't, don't. I'm trying to hold out, but I don't know how long...

PS - the hard drive mfgs are doing the same, especially WD....

TLDR: backup your data! This was my boot drive for 8 months. suddenly my computer started crashing and I got a "cannot find drive" error on startup. My backup software wouldn't recover so I was left with trying to copy files off this drive. When it hit certain files, maybe 1/1,000 it would reset. That made the copy process very slow and difficult, I didn't bother with things like Arduino libraries that had a lot of little files. I'm currently emailing back and forth with tech support to have it repaired or replaced with a refurbished model. I'm not trusting this again as a boot drive.

Since you are in touch with Samsung support, I suppose you have tried the Full Performance Mode to see if it mitigates these random crashing / reset error events?

This solved my problem on this exact drive when I ran into the issue about a year ago. Not a single problem since then. It is on literally 24/7/365 in my main work machine.

DRAM- less. But pretty darn fast
I have this as my mini M4 'extra' drive that I use for the profile directory that holds most of my photos and files. Works well. Pegs out the 40 gbps connection speed at a consistent 3800 MBps to almost 3900 r/w. I can't comment on Pcie 4.0 and getting closer to 7000. Overall very happy with it.

SMART reporting shows nothing. Other scan tools hit those specific files then the drive disconnects, so the scan tool acts like I ejected the drive rather than it has an error.

Correction, you cant get an old SALE price out of your head. $199 was never "the price", it was a sale that you may have missed, and now you're angry about it. I get it, everyone is wishing they stocked up during the 2023 sales when there were lots of them and they were abundant

I'm not able to recall under what conditions it would die, but it would (mostly just office work with a few VMs running as well) happen at seemingly random times, on a daily basis. This went on for about a week or so before I ran into the max performance 'solution' within the Samsung Magician software in a reddit thread, which did indeed fix it for me.

Idk, i have the pro and it is rock solid as a primary drive. Of course i'm not moving 1tb+ data around every few months... desktop gets light use.

I got a 4tb 990 pro on a Samsung deal for about $170 after visa cash back deal about a year ago. I was lucky.
