I used to be a die hard Anker fan. But recently I've had some of their hardware fail. First it was two power banks that had a recall, then it was my power adapter breaking in half. It had a plastic housing on it with a green light. Other Anker chargers I have use an aluminum housing. Anyways, I ended up going with this UGreen brick to replace it and it's a very solid construction. It will definitely hold up better than that plastic housing on the Anker. I wouldn't say Anker is a bad company either, they still make great surge protectors and iPhone cables. But I've used UGreen now for display cables and USB cables and they're really high quality for the price. On par with Anker's signature quality.

I saw that deal and went to the Costco website to check reviews. Despite 4.7 star rating, there's a decent number of bad reviews (15%). Users mention that those Anker units are older models, neither of the blocks are GaN, they get hot under load, they fall out of the socket, they fall apart, and that they die within a few months of use. I have both Anker and UGreen products and definitely like both companies. I think Anker did really well at first and was able to establish a good reputation and so they started to charge a lot more for their products. One good thing about them is that they actually get the official certifications and that gives a lot of consumers peace of mind but I think they've been kind of slacking on their quality and reliability lately.

UGreen actually makes quality products that punch up to Anker without costing an arm and a leg. I don't think enough people have discovered UGreen yet but they're definitely more well known today than a few years ago. Best Buy has started carrying their products recently, too. They've always been my go to for cables, hubs, and USB hardware of all kinds. I've recently been researching charging stations, blocks, and GaN chargers and noticed they have a lot of options that compete against Anker products.

Anker and UGreen are two of a handful of brands that support Samsung's PPS protocol to allow 45W Super Fast Charging 2.0 which is why I am trying to decide between the two. I did find that the UGreen also has a handful of bad reviews and sometimes have issues with dynamic power allocation where devices that are already plugged in might stop charging for a few seconds and sometimes needs to be plugged in again.

It seems like no device is perfect here. There's a cool YT channel called AllThingsOnePlace where all of these chargers get tested with electrical equipment and the reviewer goes into a lot of detail to find the strengths and weaknesses of these products. ChargerLab is another good resource for picking out which products have quality internal components.
