If you have to ask whether you need this over your phone, you don't. And if you do need a bike computer, offerings at 1/3 that price work fine (just like smartphones at a fraction of the latest Galaxy S or flagship iphone). This is the top end GPS computer for those that want the biggest (middle aged peeps cannot see that well) and baddest.

Just remember, N+1 also applies to your cycling computers.

I bought the non solar 1040 at discount last year. Honestly the solar part is a non-issue. Just wait for a further price crash

And, hey, the Coros Dura Solar is right there at 249...Yeah, I know it does a lot less than a garmin, and what it does it often doesn't do as well--but if somebody really, truly needs/wants that extra battery life, it's hard to recommend something with an MSRP 3x higher.

The 130 Plus is probably fine for 95% of riders but having a microUSB port is a deal breaker and kind of forces you to look at the newer (more expensive) models

Eh, I dont care for USB C enough. Rather get a Power Meter or fraction thereof which i think is 80% or more of the combo value of computers. if you just need to record your rides a d perhaps jogs/runs etc, maybe a garmin watch will be the best value.

Keep in mind that this 10 series model is a larger form factor and may not fit on out the front mounts due to headset clearance. If you want a more compact model with touch capability look at the Edge 840.

If you're spending this much realize the 1040 is already a legacy model. The 1050 is the current model and has a significantly brighter display unit, along with an electronic on-demand bike bell that works really well.

Don't pay extra for solar, according to multiple review the solar add very little runtime even in perfect sunny condition.
