What benefit does clear even offer over TSA pre? their business model never made sense to me since TSA pre offers the same thing for less money.

I have TSA Precheck and fly a couple of times a month. Every time I'm waiting in the TSA precheck line, someone who has Clear always comes through the Clear line passing everyone in the Precheck line. Even if there are 2-3 Clear gets to go through before Precheck. I don't know of it is a benefit or airport workers just don't care but I've seen it at multiple airports.
How is it the same? If you have clear and pre check, you skip the pre check line. If you don't have pre check you skip the general line and still have to take off your shoes and electronics etc. so no, they are not the same
TSA Pre verifies you're a safe traveler and gives perks when you reach the security checkpoint, and Clear simply allows you to skip standing in any line and goes directly to security. TSA Pre was the original line skipper, but so many travelers have it now, and the lines are long, so they added a new incentive (because of course). Clear uses biometric scanning (face and fingerprint) as verification to move the line quickly.
I travel 4 or 5 times a year and usually have a new Clear "come back" trial available, so I've never paid for it. Canceling the trial ends the service immediately, so don't do it too early if you plan to travel within a short timeframe. After the initial trial you'll receive emails or prompts in the app to come back and try Clear again for x months (usually 3-4 months).

Which lane you go to depends on whether you have a Pre-check membership. You're skipping the line where you scan your boarding pass and ID ahead of security.
ETA: I think the intentions of Clear was supposed to span larger than just airports (think sports games, amusement parks) but I don't know that it's been widely adopted in those ways yet.
