This is awesome, I have a 5 and 8 year old who will love this. They love to play in the woods, and we love to hike so the three mile range is a nice perk.

Radio Engineer here ...

Advertised: 3 miles (clear, flat, no obstacles).

BUT REALITY IS ITS A 0.5W TRANSCIEVER SO AT BEST:

~200–300 yards in neighborhoods

~½ mile in open parks

~1 mile max with perfect line-of-sight. (normally across smooth water)

They get the 2-4 mile from calculating if they were in a near vacuum (space) and sending one morse code letter ... you would think the FCC and FTC would have put an end to this mileage crap decades ago ...
