A proper system won't cost you 2-3K. The drawback to those systems is that there are a lot of pieces and wires. For me, that became the reason to switch to a soundbar--I had no way to run the wires to my side and read speakers without going in front of the fireplace, which we now use (had a wood insert installed).
Anyway, I briefly had the 990C and thought it sounded great, but it simply cannot compare to a dedicated surround system.
Is there even an Atmos receiver for this price much less all the Atmos speakers
Did you pickup your soundbar from PC Richard's, or were you able to get Samsung to price match? I was in that 399 fiascal.
I'm wondering this too as I have the same situation. I've been comparing online between this soundbar and the LG s95tr and the Samsung still comes out ahead.

I upgraded to this soundbar from LG S80TR, which is a huge upgrade considering the voice clarity and improved bass and surround sound.
If you are considering separates (receiver and speakers) to compare with a soundbar, it's like comparing oranges to apples. Even my 20 years old Onkyo 5.1 system sounds better than any soundbar. It doesn't have atmos or all the latest tech, still sounds better.
Q990D sounds good, definitely worth it at this price point. Every company puts out a new "upgraded' model every year and the previous models drop in price. Hence, I think today, this is a good price to buy. This may become a regular price after a few months.
Works fine with LG TV but you can take advantage of QSymphony feature with the latest Samsung TVs. I don't know how good that feature is as I don't have a Samsung TV to try.
In the initial days I had issues with this soundbar that the voice was coming from the rear speakers and I was unable to correct it. But after a few days, it got fixed by itself.
Overall I am happy with this soundbar.

Thanks for the input. After much thought and talking to one of my local retailers, the Samsung soundbar is the better option to go with. I ended up getting the Q990F instead though because they gave me a deal I couldn't pass up.
Also, I went in for two of these as I had some family members love my Q990C and they wanted a similar setup.
