Remember the early days of flip phones when people were aghast at the idea of being tracked wherever they went?

Now we're spending money to keep trackers on us, intentionally.

People are inherently stupid. I had friends tell me "whatever will I do with a camera on a phone". Embrace Change

Isn't it like.. infinitely in range? Just so long as there's another person's iphone next to it or something?

The poster is referring to the range the AirTag can be from "another person's iphone" ; the new version will have a 2nd gen ultra wide band chip that will improve connection/range to iphone 15 and up, along with a more difficult to remove speaker.

I have a popup wallet that integrates this AirTag. Helped me find my wallet numerous times around the house and alerts me if I leave it behind somewhere.

There's so many different ways to track us now, I don't think it's meaningful to select one product to blame

I enjoy the concept of AirTag, but I have not had good luck with close-up precision. I have tagged the kids before in a crowd, but it never seems to find them. I will know they are in the building, but the phone will not "find" them until I am 3 feet away from them.

Does Apple ever discount these?
I'd like to get some with engraving for a gift but not for $100 when they can be found regularly for $70. 4-pack anyways.

I like AirTags.
Be aware that they do NOT come with any kind of holders.
There are many kinds of holders available. I bought a wallet card that is shaped like a credit card, a key chain holder, a dog collar holder (slides onto the collar and covers the Air Tag to keep it clean), and a glue on holder that comes with strong double-sided tape to affix to devices.
I went on a mercy mission to Ukraine last Fall, and we had over 300 pounds of knit goods for women and children. An AirTag went in each duffel bag so we could track that they made it on the flight and into the terminal. Worked great with all six bags.

The new AirTags expected to release late. This summer will have greater precision

No. You do whatever you want, but I'm not embracing change merely for the sake of change.
