The design is a knock off of the air force survival knife. The saw back was designed to saw through the thin aluminum skin of an aircraft in case of a crash. On the other side of the coin, the lower carbon steel is easy to sharpen in the field vs some of the new super steels and being softer, has a bit of flex to it which a survival knife that may take a beating should have.
