You can even test this out in the store

I've set up a few iPads for family. When I touch the screen on the basic iPad, it's like you could feel a 'gap'. I'm not sure how to explain it

I am gaming on my iTab and I immediately felt the difference. The screens are also different, visible when watching movies in dark. Otherwise, as you said, they perform the same.

Pretty much what I'm looking for - a tablet that has video out and a windowing system. Will the iPad A16 do this once iOS26 comes out?

No idea, but I assume Apple would try to differentiate its products somehow and not make it available to the standard iPad line.
