Obviously the safest thing to do if you're planning on doing this is to root it during the return window on the off chance it bricks.

This just runs straight up android. Further, according to the XDA thread in the wiki, you can also root this specific model if you want to be able to remove any of the crapware that most cheap tablets have (No idea what they load on this model tablet). But as usual, rooting has its risks so if it were me I'd root it during the return window in case it bricks (afaik return window is 30 days for electronics for Walmart, but you should double check that first).
