Do you have to be within the same wifi connection range for this to work or you can play it anywhere as long as the ps5 is on?

As long PS5 is turn on and enable remote play. You can download Remote Play app on your phone and check how it works out for you. Then turn on use mobile data if you're outside your network. The worst thing can happen is that you need to port forward which very easy to do.

Given that Sony has plans for their own portable, just buy this knowing that in the near future, a true PSP / Vita successor may be revealed.
