I picked this mainly for wildfire season outages and the built-in NEMA 14-30R for backup power transfer. Also experimenting with recharging from my EV's 12V port (~100W trickle). Considering a VortiPower setup to pull faster DC charge from the EV if needed.

This isn't a perfect system (yet), but for a plug-and-play battery backup kit with 240V output and decent support, it checks a lot of boxes.

Extra 5% off with code OFFER5
  • Setup is dead simple, and the app works decently well for basic monitoring.
  • UPS mode works, but there are a few quirks (see below).
  • With 20kWh capacity, this should get us through ~2-3 days of backup for essentials (fridge, lights, Wi-Fi, etc.).
  • Great build quality and nearly silent operation – ideal for indoor use or apartment setups where gas gennies aren't an option.

With no disrespect intended, this is a very expensive way to arrive at 20kWh with 30A output. Trickling at an unrealistic 100W will do almost nothing, especially when you understand all of the witchcraft that goes into producing that 100W in the car.

The vortipowrr is hella neat but.. is it vaporware? Lots of photoshopped images on their site and "shipments estimated April 2025". Seems like it never happened?

What do you recommend to buy for whole hose backup that would last for days if needed and can be recharged with solar. I am not an expert at all hence my question, just wanted to take advantage of the gov credit before it expires

This setup definitely isn't the most cost-effective way to get 20kWh + 30A, no argument there. I went this route mainly for the plug-and-play convenience, indoor-safe use (no fumes or noise), and ease of integration without needing permits or transfer switches.

Yeah, the 100W trickle from the EV isn't practical for full recharging, more of a "just because I could" experiment than a real solution. Agree that it's inefficient and mostly symbolic at best.

As for VortiPower, yeah, I've seen the same red flags. Lots of CG-style promo shots and vague shipping dates. I'm watching it with cautious curiosity but not banking on it. Would love a reliable EV-to-home DC bridge, but I'm not holding my breath just yet.

Appreciate the honest take.
