All my Orients have been good watches. Nice looking, too.

Excellent value for a good "entry" to automatics. I have the older version, love it.

One of the most under-rated and not on the radar of the watch snobs. Best "value" watch out there in my opinion.

The blue dial is slightly more expensive and has luminescence. Which one is better?

Only downside to this is the crystal is not sapphire so it will scratch more easily, but for the price point it will be hard to get a sapphire crystal. Pretty solid price

I have a similar model in blue (RA-AA0818L19B) and love it. I had to regulate it a little bit but keeps excellent time. I think it's just a matter of preference on the color. My model cost more, but I got it because of the sapphire.

One thing to note is that the metal band is not that good. I bought it knowing that, though, and replaced it with a rubber strap.

This a great watch. I've had this same Mako II since 2019. I bought a replacement bracelet from strapcode.com and swapped out the crystal with sapphire from usa.crystaltimes.net; the sapphire i got was double-domed and had a nice anti-reflective coating to it to give it a little character when reflecting in the right light. Since doing these mods, this watch has been my daily driver and wear it everywhere and do everything with it on my wrist.

Even most "watch snobs" recognize the quality/value of Orient.

If I had a friend considering an Invicta, I'd point them to an Orient.

Depends on how you define value. San Martin makes better finished and looking watches in the price range.
The Mako 2 cuts some serious corners with the Mineral crystal and sub par jangly bracelet and low end clasp and less than ideal bezel and crown action. I like the look of an aluminum bezel but that is also a cost cutting measure now that matte ceramics are on the market.
I do think they are a good value for a Japanese brand, but if looking on the global scale there are better values out there that use Japanese guts.

Ray II [jomashop.com] is also on sale for $164. Same watch but slightly different bezel, dial (dot indices > stick and numbers), and bracelet (polishing down the middle).

Kammasu is the upgraded version of these two. Again slightly different package, but upgraded with sapphire crystal.

Mako III also exists, but it has a funkier dial/bezel colors so not a lot of cross-shopping.

Given their popularity there's a huge modification market. Long Island Watch sells replacement bracelets and rubber straps made in-house -- I've never used them but they look quality. I've been cross-shopping these watches for a couple weeks, also considering Seiko SRPD55 and SSK GMT. Both are more expensive than these Orients by ~$70 and ~$140 so having trouble deciding. Again similar after-market resources given their popularity.

Agreed. Any serious watch collector is aware of Orient watches. One of the defining elements of Orient is that it is one of the true watchmakers, meaning that they actually build watches including their own movements. Orient makes all types of watches, from dress to sport and also from entry level to mid-range. The movements, while not always the most accurate, are generally robust and reliable. Some are developed from older Seiko movements which eventually purchased Orient (yes, Orient is a subsidiary of Seiko Epson Corporation).

Within my collection, I still have an original "Pepsi" Mako and Orange Ray (with the extra crown for date change), three Tritons ("Baby Sat"), couple of Bambino (2nd Gen, one is the classic creme dial with blue hands) and three of the Orient Stars. Even as I try to shrink by collection, I find it difficult to part with an Orient.

Does San Martin carry anything that isn't trying to look like a Rolex?

Yes, of course they do.

43 watches on that page (which is only a sub set of what they make). only 6 of them are clear Rolex homages. In fact, way more are Tudor homages, but they have plenty of stuff that isn't Rolex family.
