every year or two costco sells these excellent messenger style tote bags that are white plastic lined for freezer items and to contain spills. outside is a heavy canvas on the bottom is an extra layer and a strap the goes all around. similar bags sell on ebay and amazon for $15-$35, so $7+tax is a steal at your local Costco now. the blue version was being sold 2 years ago. the only improvement i made on this bag is to add a velcro strap to keep the 2 canvas handles tied together, otherwise i find they slip off your shoulder too easy. i often carry 30-40 pounds of produce and groceries in these bags, and even after 100 miles walking like that, they have not blown a seam or torn the lining. the costco logo is only on the on zipper pocket side. the other side is a simply plain canvas with the handle strap continuing down to the bottom. there is no internal pocket or keychain ring.

I've found the Trader Joe's insulated bags to be handy as well, often dumped ice in them for to keep drinks cool at picnic parties, easier to carry vs ice chest; anybody that owns both care to compare? (I also have the Hawaiian flower 2 pack from Costco which are similar to the TJ ones).

I have a few of these. Definitely worth it and saves you from using the empty boxes near the checkout lines at the clubs.

Always great to see a long-use review.

Here are some similar totes to start a comparison:
http://www.amazon.com/Large-Coole...008Q2N34Y/ - looks like the closest match in design
http://www.amazon.com/Insulated-z...B002NI4PD0 - smaller, and I think this one is closer to the one Trader Joe's has
http://www.amazon.com/Arctic-Zone...00314FBVA/ - about as big, but I'm not sure if the handles go around the bottom for support

This Costco one looks like a great price if you've got membership or a gift card, and don't mind the color and branding on one side. I'll pick up a couple next time I'm there, big sturdy cooler totes are great to supplement a hard cooler in the car for unplanned grocery trips, especially in L.A. where plastic bags got dimed.

How washable are these? Does the interior hold up well to being machine washed?

If it's like the Trader Joe's one and the other Costco ones I wash them in cold water, delicate cycle, then air dry. (I have a top-loading washer with a short stubby agitator)
