NASCAR 2016 No OT Please All Star Weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway

25,136 707 February 4, 2016 at 10:21 PM in Autos
I probably won't do as many updates during this Nascar season but I figured I would start a thread anyway. The Can-Am Qualifying Duels are just two weeks from tonight and the Daytona 500 and the start of the season is just over two weeks away.

Tony Stewart's start to his final season isn't getting off to the start anyone would have hoped. He suffered a burst fracture of the L1 vertebra after landing hard while riding in the sand dunes in southern California. He will miss the Daytona 500 for sure and likely will be out for quite a while beyond that.

There hasn't been any announcement about who will replace Stewart in the 14 car. Last year there were quite a few options for replacement drivers with so many young drivers moving up from the Xfinity series. Many of those drivers now have rides of their own and aren't available. I was kind of hoping Michael Waltrip would fill in for at least Daytona but he already worked out a deal to drive the 83 car.

Faint

I thought one of the reasons Tony formed SHR was because he wanted to drive a Chevy and JGR switched to Toyota. Ford must be throwing a ton of money his way.

I have to think that Tony retiring after this year had to be a big part of this decision. Being an owner of a Ford powered team is a little more disconnected from actually driving a Ford powered car. I like the move and I can appreciate Stewart-Haas wanting to become more independent. Right now they are pretty much just driving Hendrick cars. Now they may be using Roush engines but it sounds like they are expanding and will be doing their own chassis work as well. They will have to step it up in a big way to offset no longer having that Hendrick support system though. But like you said there has to be a huge amount of money and support coming from Ford to make a switch like this happen.

I'm night shift tonight so I should get to hear the replays of the daytime talk shows on Sirius. I can't wait to hear some of the callers on this one. laugh out loud

Random true story: While I was in Daytona, I got to sit with Pat Patterson at Outback. He's a really, really interesting and nice guy.

Well, Stewart-Haas certainly stirred the pot with the fans. I should have written down some of the better calls so I would remember them. There were a lot of angry fans but also at least as many who are thrilled with the move.

There were some funny calls about the situation as well. One die-hard Ford fan put it in perspective, saying "Now I can drink Budweiser, Miller Lite, and Busch beer. laugh out loud

My favorite was the one who suggested that Tony Stewart with his scruffy beard should team up with Gillette so he can have the Gillette Fusion Fusion car.

Hard to beat the action this weekend. Especially the four-way drag race to the finish line at the end between Clint Bowyer, Greg Biffle, Ty Dillon, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. that ended with Bowyer crossing the finish line out of control but taking the win right before crashing head-on into the wall.

Oh wait, that was The Nascar Holeshot Challenge at the Supercross event Saturday night in the Georgia Dome. That was the highlight of the weekend for me. I happened to have the Supercross event on tv but wasn't watching all that close and didn't even know they were doing the holeshot challenge until I heard something about Clint Bowyer crashing into the wall and looked up.

It was hilarious, but I think some of the comments on Twitter by other Nascar drivers were even better. laugh out loud

Week 5 already. I haven't been able to watch much of the races but I have listened quite a bit on the radio. So far the lower downforce package seems promising but it is pretty early to be able to say for sure. There has been a handful of noteworthy incidents in the first four weeks but I can only think of a few right now.

Two photo finishes in four races is pretty fun to watch. The final lap at Phoenix with Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvich beating and banging all the way to the end was fantastic and maybe the most entertaining finish I have seen in years. One of the more bizarre incidents was Jimmie Johnson having his steering wheel come off in practice and the car suddenly going straight into the wall. Scary from a potential injury point of view but I would sure love to see an in-car video of that happening. laugh out loud

I'm watching today and about 30 laps in and it looks like there may be some big tire issues today.

Tony Stewart makes his return this weekend at Richmond. And gets fined for talking about safety issues. laugh out loud

I haven't been able to watch much racing at all this year. I have listened to at least parts of the races on the radio though. And listening to the callers and hosts of the talk shows it sounds like people are quite a bit happier with the competition and racing this year.

I do have to say that Chase Elliott has done better than I expected him to.

I was hoping to get to see more of Vickers as the replacement driver for Stewart but after hearing that Tony is coming back this weekend I am looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Sounds like it is just for this week and then he will start the race to get the points at Talladega and then let Ty Dillon finish the race. Personally I don't see Stewart getting out of that car during the race unless he is hurting pretty bad. I bet he changes his mind.

As far as the fine from Nascar, I think Stewart is dead-on about the lug nut issue. The way it all started with Nascar no longer penalizing a team if something happened and they didn't get all the lugs tight wasn't a big deal. But it has progressed now to the point where some teams are only gluing 3 lug nuts to the wheels to begin with on the left sides, and 4 on the right. And like Stewart said it almost forces the crew chiefs to follow the lead of those teams or they lose too many spots on pit road.

I'm glad Stewart isn't afraid to speak out on things like that and I am glad the Drivers Council backed him up and offered to pay the fine, though I doubt the money means that much to Stewart.

The race after this weekend is Talladega. Tony doesn't want to risk getting into "the big one" and reinjuring his back. Can't say as I blame him considering his stance on the lugnut issue.

I think his plan for Talladega is smart, I just wonder if he will stick with it after going through qualifying, practice, and actually starting the race. Unless maybe Ty Dillon is going to get all the practice time as well to give him better preparation for the race. I think Tony has to do the qualifying to keep himself eligible for the Chase but I'm not even sure about that.

I would rather see him play it safe at this point. At least at Talladega they should be able to do a driver swap under caution without going down a lap.

Unlikely but interesting scenario regarding the driver swap. What would happen if Tony Stewart started the race at Talladega and then swaps with Ty Dillon as planned and then Ty Dillon went on to win the race? Would that qualify Stewart for the Chase? (Assuming he was able to stay in the top 30 in points for the rest of the year) Unless the rule has been changed, "The driver who starts the race earns all the points, statistics, and purse money". In the past that has always included getting credit for the win.

Admittedly it is very unlikely that Ty Dillon would get the win but it could happen. Is it possible that a win by someone else could qualify Stewart? I would love to see the drama that would create. laugh out loud

Not likely, but it's within the scope of the rules. I think only once in NASCAR history has a relief driver won a race. It would be awesome if it did happen. laugh out loud

That one time must have been the Denny Hamlin one then right? That was the one that came to mind but I didn't realize that was the only time it had happened. If I recall correctly, there was a lot of confusion back then with fans because nobody really understood why Hamlin didn't get credit for the win.

IIRC, it was back in the 70s or 80s. I can't recall it happening in recent memory.

Decent race yesterday. The bump and run at the finish was pretty cool. Although I was the one that posted on twitter that Carl Edwards hates puppies and kittens, since Busch's car was sponsored by a pet hospital. laugh out loud

From Nascar.com on Talladega.

Does Tony Stewart earn points at Talladega? What would happen if Ty Dillon won?

The answer from NASCAR: If Stewart begins the race, he is the driver of record. The points accrued from whatever place Dillon finishes go into the standings under Stewart's name. If Dillon finishes the race in the No. 14 and winds up in Victory Lane, it will go down as a victory for Stewart and would count toward his Chase eligibility.

Guess that makes it official.
