Republic is launching two special offers this month to discount phones and provide six months of free service. Republic is offering the Moto Z Play for $349 between December 7th and 12th, and the Huawei Ascend 5W for $129 between December 13th and 19th. Both handsets will come with a contract-free six months of free service with unlimited calls and texts, and 1GB of data.

Republic Wireless is celebrating independence today, after raising enough funding to spin-off as an independent company from parent company Bandwidth. Republic Wireless started off life five years ago as a mobile virtual network operator using Sprint's network as a backup, and primarily offloading calls and texts to Wi-Fi. Earlier this year, Republic Wireless added T-Mobile support, which allowed the carrier to support top Android phones including Samsung's Galaxy S7.

are the phones locked to RW? If so, is there a way to unlock them? I remember in the past RW phones were permanently 'stuck' to RW and could only be used on RW, and nothing else. I really didn't like the inflexibility, which is why I never tried RW. Now I see they have both sprint and gsm (I guess tmobile?) services, so maybe this changed? If I don't like Rw can I take the phone elsewhere now?

Are the bootloaders unlocked on these phones? If so, is there a way to unlock them? I'm heavily into installing custom 3rd party roms, so this is a must for me.

the new phones, with the 3.0 plans are not locked to RW. you should be able to take them elsewhere. and you are right the new plans are T-Mobile based

I'm not sure about the ROMs and unlocking

I think the moto z play if tempting but just getting the play down where it should have been priced originally.

I also have problem with their T-Mobile coverage (Midwest) and left RW due missing their Sprint coverage (don't kill me).

FYI is also a pretty big pain to port out of RW. the VoIP service causes the number you have with them to be labeled as a landline. takes a good 48 hours to port out, some carriers like cricket can't port from them so require an intermediary carrier to port to. this is one of my biggest roadblocks from going back them

thanks for the info, especially about the porting hassle. I was considering it for the z play b/c it seemed like a good deal. I wasn't sure if they were locked down like the old RW phones, but from the info I've read, it seems they don't do that anymore. From the moto website, this should be able to have the bootloader unlocked. There isn't much rom support for it yet, but I really don't like carrier bloat (nexus devices have spoiled me).

I have different experience. Porting out from them was incredibly simple and pretty quick.

what carrier did you port to? What I described isn't unique to RW, it's due to their VoIP-first setup

edit: for example, here are various RW forum posts about it. Post 1 [republicwireless.com], Post 2 [republicwireless.com], Post 3 [republicwireless.com].
I had a particularly tough time since my number can't be carried by T-Mobile, which is the first recommendation by several members on the forums ("get T-Mobile port out of RW as an intermediate"). So I ended up doing something similar but porting to H2O (and didn't plan on it but stayed there for the pricing and AT&T service).

Just to be clear, they are basically using T-Mobile's network when you are not on wifi right? Basically equivalent to T-Mobile?

Does Republic Wireless provide ROM's? Not sure I'm asking the question correctly but what I mean is I would rather not have to wait on a Republic Wireless-specific version of Nougat to be released.

This just in from Republic Wireless:

From 12/7 - 12/12: Take $100 off a Moto Z Play (discounted from $449 to $349, while supplies last.)
From 12/13 - while supplies last: Take $50 off an Ascend 5W by Huawei (a soon-to-be-launched new phone with a premium design made even more affordable at Republic, discounted from $179 to $129, while supplies last.)

The best part of the deal - and an unheard of move for us, or any carrier - is that both of these phones will come with up to six months of FREE service (on our $20 unlimited talk & text + 1GB of cell data plan. Taxes and telecom fees not included. See offer for full details1.)

Current RW customers will get 1/2 month free (Billing will start in January)!
