If you just want to read though just get the basic kindle. It's not that much more, runs faster, and gets more than 3 hours of battery life.

Yes, you can install the Kindle app, and for $20 if that is all you need, you will probably be satisfied. I bought them for my kids a couple years ago and hacked the crap out of them for fun....
