My cousin works on boats, so encounters a lot of extinguishers. He says the official procedure for "servicing" an FE is to give it a whack on the bottom with a rubber mallet! :)

The last recharge and pressure testing on a 12-year-old FE cost me about $30. You might find someone that works out of a service truck to be cheaper. This price point is where it's easier to replace...

If you need them to be rechargeable for a commercial use I'd buy something else. If you want them to be rechargeable for your home use, don't buy into the fire service company BS about expiration...
