Oh old post, the answer to the above question was yes, I found they are better. Only lacking in a little bass oomph compared to those closed sony's, but still good bass, overall pretty amazing...

These work very well as gaming headsets with any detachable mic. Very comfortable and the open back makes a huge difference when you have them on for a long time as can happen while gaming.

Yep, I've been in the same boat too. I tried using Razer's simulated surround. Plantronics used a Dolby simulated as did the Turtle Beach.
