If you are able to plug the new drive in while you still have the old one in your computer (you would need an open m.2 slot or open SATA data and power if going 2.5) you can boot off of the old drive...

I replaced an old hard drive with an SSD. The computer did boot up faster and was overall snappier. You will notice the difference. I had a 2500k i5 which I kept.
