If you have a floating neutral gen then an interlock is a nice cheap option. FYI I have a 4 and 2 tomorrow inverter system which has no LRA spec (gradual ramp up) The small unit (AH and Outdoor...

They have mostly sold out of these in my area, but one store still has stock. Not sure how many.

I think my air handler is like 2 amps maybe and the condenser is 18 amps or 72 Locked Rotor Amps.

If I can find it in another state, would shipping kill the deal? Can anyone recommend a low cost shipping carrier?

For those planning to use an interlock kit and connecting it to your whole house, I strongly recommend looking for a unit that advertises < ~5-6% THD. This means that there isn't a lot of noise...

I'm wondering - do you have the amp draw from your condenser and airhandler ?

I was wondering about this recently - specifically running the whole house AC from a Yamaha 6300i or Honda 7000i. These units are inverters capable of 5500 running watts. The Yamaha could be easily...

I agree whole house is the best way to go, if you can afford it. I currently alternate a 5500 and 6500 Generac and use a 12k/15k window ac or two for cooling for the dogs. I am currently at hour...

If you can afford a whole house standalone generator, go that route. I messed around for years with portables simply because that is what I could afford until recently. Just to give you an idea on...

Not sure about that when you consider 10% tax? Good price though. Didn't see the price drop. It might be cheaper at lowe's if someone had a coupon and/or gift cards saved up.

For those considering powering the central AC, your outdoor AC compressor is likely 240 volt. Your generator will have to have 240 volt output to power it. My Goodman 21k BTU is 240 volt.

That hard start kit referenced above is not a true kit. It's crap. Look for 5-2-1 kits. Even then, you are going to need 10 kw for inrush or you will fry everything that has a transformer in it.

Would not advise running gas lines (unless there's already a hookup) as a DIY'er.
