I dont think you can install it straight like that. That is why 3 way switches exist for a reason. There is a companion switch for this so you can do a 3 way setup. The model # I think is RF9517....

If you can pop off the plastic (intact), you could use krylon plastic paint or rustoleum's variety to change the color to white. Is the plastic removable?

Don't take out from the protective paper wrap. Take the plastic cover off from the actual switch area. put a masking tape on led and metal part on top and bottom. Go home depot and buy rustoleum...

Why would you have to paint it every year? Paint is pretty durable. Even a lot of commercial goods are simply painted. Hell the glasses I'm wearing right now are just painted.
