Do you have a local camera shop you can trust? I would bet that's a high quote for repair from Nikon. It's super hard for them to say without actually seeing it and having it in their hands.

No hints on fixing it, but if you have to replace it, I strongly suggest that you go to a 18-140mm lens or something similar.
