I think it depends on the situation. If you have dogs that shed and worried about dog odor. I would choose the 5500-2, the carbon filter has a longer life span which I can vacuum and is washable....

And you can buy replacement filters from Costco for the 535(5300-2) $89.99 - 2yr and the 555 (5500-2) $59.99 - 1 yr, both of which should work interchangeably.
