Neither is a single external hard drive using your logic... I use R10 for most used data redundancy and R5 or 1 for hot backups. Critical data gets backed up incrementally to blueray or USB flash....

Backing up 8TB of data reliability will get expensive. Best to have a tiered system and reserve most expensive backup solutions for critical data like pron collection.

I fear you are the exception. Most folks probably use this as their primary backup drive. Eggs in one basket issue.... I think I will stick to my RAID10 or 5 on a good LSI controller.
