My cousin has one and the clear part where you can see water level is made out of plastic I think, it definitely gets hot since when water boils you can see it bubbling there.

You still need to compensate for heat loss if you don't pre-heat your cups/brewer/carafe/etc. Need a thermometer to figure out how much hotter the water needs to be to offset it.
