I've had multiple SSDs fail so it certainly happens. The biggest thing is really what type of NAND is being used and how much spare is on the drive.

Yes, when SSDs fail it tends to be a component failure and they just aren't detected by the PC anymore. I've had a few that just 'disappeared' one day and poof gone
