Mine is hooked up to an audio/video receiver. It doesn't auto select inputs when my retro pi is on. Therefore I need to turn mine off when not in use. That's a pretty standard use.

There is little to no reason to bother. The Pi is the sort of device that is meant to be left on; there's no reason not to. The power cost would be in the area of $3 if left on 24/7 for a year.
