No, you can always use WIFI right out of the box. But it's still a good ideal to remove the original Verizon sim before turning it on for the first time, in case you want to unlock it in the future.

Looks like i was wrong about VZ unlocks. VZ smartphones come unlocked, BUT, NOT the prepaid phones. Prepaid are unlocked after 12 mos of prepaid service, or i guess using a code before then.
