I chatted with an online rep and then went into a corporate store and had no issue with the cancel-and-add new line strategy. It worked for me.

Thanks OP. This was great for me as I needed to add three lines and buy phones for my kids and upgrade for one kid. Did it over the phone and they waived the activation fees.
