I go to kroger fuel, you get the 5% bonus there from chase, fuel is sometimes cheaper than shell

Far too complicated. I use my Costco card and get 4% (around 10 cents per gallon rebate AT ANY gas station, including Costco, with no fiddling with card signups.

I just added my Chase Freedom to the linked accounts in my FR account. I think that will be how they check/verify that you are a Freedom account holder and extend your FR account to 2018.

Sure, why wouldn't it? You aren't required to pay for the gas with a credit card. At some stations (like mine), using a GC gets you the cash price.
