pH from spring can be acidic and contain unwanted particulates such as high amounts of coliform and other pathogens which still must be carefully filtered. In my area closest spring is 40 miles

I will agree, unless they're loving somewhere like NYC, the pH there is 9, SUPPOSEDLY. But regardless, if you're close enough to a spring, people should go fill a glass bottle there....
