It is free if you use bing as a search engine. Do the searches and you will never have to pay for xbox live again.

I expired yesterday... Went into settings on XB1 and chose my XBL subscription > Extend your membership. I was able to "subscribe" for $39.99 for the first year, then it will auto renew at $59.99...

Some people are having success with $39.99 Plus tax direct through Microsoft if your account is close to expiration. You will also have to turn off auto reorder. That one is ymmv
