I've had no problems with just keys in mine. I even carry a mini box knife in it (takes a special attachment) that I can remove without taking the whole thing apart so I can toss the blade if needed.

If you like the concept of keysmarts, but found the quality lacking you should check out keybar. They cost more, but you shouldn't have the tightening/looseness issue.

biggest problem for me was having the screws come loose on the keysmart. nothing like looking for your keys and screws while you're late to work in the morning.
