I have not tried this, but setting it out in the sun is probably key. That is how we get rid of smells and stains in tupperware.

Just did the steam clean with lemon today. Doesn't work. Ring used to smell like the Indian food I had made and now it smells like the Indian food with some lemon.

My thoughts as well. Also, safety. When you're dealing with a pressure vessel, a bad seal could cause serious injuries.

Does the smell get into the food? I have used mine for 6 months and have not noticed any difference in food taste. Don't really go and smell the ring etc?

A proper seal is needed for the Instant Pot to pressurize. The ring tends to absorb odors of the food that is cooked in the pot and at least mine smells just horrible. I have tried cleaning it...
