you do not need the sensor - you know you have an issue with the leaky pipe. Fix it.
those are meant to inform you / allow automated action in case you are not around and water suddenly burst.

it could be - but make sure that water puddle will not be deeper than 1/8" I think that 1/4" would be pushing your luck.

I would say no. I think these get wet once and then they are done. By wet I'm talking properly wet (e.g. a broken pipe) and not a test (I get my fingers wet and touch the metal sensors).
